POSITION DESCRIPTION

 

POSITION TITLE: SPED Teacher Assistant 

 

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Special Education Paraprofessional supports certified teachers in providing a safe, nurturing, and inclusive learning environment for students with special needs. This role involves working directly with students, assisting in classroom activities, and helping to implement individualized education plans (IEPs). The paraprofessional plays a critical role in fostering the social, emotional, cognitive, and physical development of children with diverse abilities.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Student Support:
    • Assist in the implementation of IEP goals and objectives.
    • Provide one-on-one or small group support to students with special needs.
    • Help with activities of daily living (e.g., feeding, toileting) as needed.
    • Support students in developing social skills and managing behaviors.
  2. Instructional Assistance:
    • Work closely with the classroom teacher to deliver instruction tailored to the needs of each student.
    • Prepare and organize instructional materials and activities.
    • Assist in adapting classroom activities and materials to accommodate various learning styles and abilities.
    • Monitor student progress and report observations to the teacher.
  3. Classroom Management:
    • Maintain a positive and inclusive classroom environment.
    • Assist in managing student behavior through the use of positive reinforcement strategies.
    • Ensure the safety and well-being of all students during classroom activities, recess, and field trips.
  4. Communication:
    • Collaborate with the teaching staff, therapists, and other professionals to ensure a cohesive approach to each student’s education.
    • Communicate effectively with parents and caregivers, as needed, regarding student progress and any concerns.
    • Participate in team meetings and professional development sessions.
  5. Record Keeping:
    • Assist in maintaining accurate records related to student performance, behavior, and progress.
    • Document any incidents or significant observations as required by school policies.
  6. General Support:
    • Assist with classroom setup and cleanup.
    • Supervise students during transition, meals, and other non-classroom activities.
    • Support inclusion efforts by helping students with special needs participate in general preschool activities.
